In 1925, he organized and led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first successful African-American led labor union. Born in Florida in 1889, Asa Phillip Randolph grew up the son of a minister in the Black community of Jacksonville. In 1958 and 1959, Randolph organized Youth Marches for Integrated Schools in Washington, D.C.[4] At the same time, he arranged for Rustin to teach King how to organize peaceful demonstrations in Alabama and to form alliances with progressive whites.
